Design - Start Here

I feel like people always start their house plan search in the wrong spot, browsing thousands of plans online. While it’s a great place for getting ideas, it can often fool us into emphasizing the wrong aspects of plans. For example, I’ve seen so many clients tell me they love a floor plan, only come to find out, they have no idea how the floor plan actually feels on the inside, they just liked the look from the front. First off, let’s start where you live. Before even looking at a floor plan or talking to an architect or designer, you should know where your family spends its time. It sounds simple, but make sure to pay attention and track it. Note where you go when you wake, where do you sit when you have your morning coffee, where would you want to sit when you have your morning coffee. With this viewpoint in mind, you can start to assemble what your dream house “feels” like before even looking at a plan. Armed with this information, you can now start planning. An architect or designer is a great place to start since most likely your dream home doesn’t sit online in some floor plan database somewhere. A good designer should be able to marry your dreams of how home functions alongside the vision you had for the beautiful exterior.
